lyrics

Dear mother, I’m writing to keep you abreast
That I’m dreaming of being a capitalist

So I went out and bought myself lots of new friends
While the workers bought candles to burn at both ends

I’ll build up that wall just to keep wages down
And I’ll close all the factories in our old hometown

Though I may have betrayed the public trust
I’ve only a few more unions to bust

Like the bankers, I’ll never see time in a jail
And I don’t care about those too small to fail
Dear mother, tell me. Aren’t you so proud of me?

At truck stops and restaurants and down at the mall
I’ve really got these workers backed up to the wall

‘Cause my company’s a person with all of the rights
And the workers just capital with no strength to fight

Like the bankers, I’ll never see time in a jail
And I don’t care about those too small to fail
Dear mother, tell me. Aren’t you so proud of me?

They’re passing their laws up on Capitol Hill
Against their own interests and constituents’ will

They’re not brothers nor sisters, misters nor misses
They’re an unfortunate cost of the capitalist system

Like the bankers, I’ll never see time in a jail
And I don’t care about those too small to fail
Dear mother, tell me. Aren’t you so proud of me?
Your little capitalist

Now this all might sound like I’ve gone insane
Just know that I won’t be a part of this game

Dear mother, I wrote you this letter in jest
‘Cause I’ve no dreams of being a capitalist

So let’s round up the bankers and send them to jail
‘Cause I’m singing for those too small to fail
Dear mother, tell me. Aren’t you so proud of me?
Your little socialist

about

Rad Radical San Jose, California

Make music. Make art. Then give it away.

Anti-racist, anti- fascist.

I’m absolutely convinced of the power of the audience to come together, to help each other through bad times. It’s what the Clash did for me. They gave me music and community and politics and a belief that anything was possible. The future is, indeed, unwritten.
